WMS Drama Club takes the stage
By Zeel Patel
In May the WMS Drama Club performed Aladdin, Jr. "For our large group, there are a lot of roles. The music is fantastic, and it’s a story that many are familiar with,” says Mrs. Mendes, the director of the musical.
Having started in mid-December, the practices ended May.14. Performances were May.14-17th at multiple venues: WMS, city-wide, and at Lake Compounce Amusement Park in Bristol, CT.
“Originally, I wanted to do Guys and Dolls, Jr,” says Mrs. Mendes, the director of the musical. However, “Meriden Youth Theater chose Guys and Dolls, Jr. for their show this year." Although not the first choice for this year, Aladdin, Jr. was a strong second choice.
With two casts and eight lead roles, The Arabian cast performed on May.14 and 16, and Sahara cast, on May 15 and May 17.

Back stage pass

Working with props and paints is not the only things backstage crew does. Participants can actually build some of the props.
For example, this year's backstage crew built the cave wall for Aladdin, Jr. The Crew can also paint props that need to be edited. When they borrow props from other schools sometimes they need to modify the prop to fit the show. As a backstage worker, I found it fun to make the props because we are able to be creative with them and see our work on stage.
Some other important jobs are the prop managers and the assistant stage managers. This year's prop managers were Galilea Meza and Jake Donlon. The assistant stage managers were Amanda Gagne and Shawn Angiletta.
To keep all the props together on the prop cart is the prop manager's job. Also they need to make sure the actors/actresses get their props in time to go on the stage. The assistant stage managers make sure everyone is doing his/her jobs and helps cue the actors/actresses to go on stage. They also help keep everyone quiet backstage.
Some other important jobs are the curtains and spotlight. The person working the curtains closes the curtains when the crew needs to set up the next scene. The person working the spotlight changes the colors sometimes during a certain scene. Also he/she keeps the spotlight on the person who is speaking or has a big part in that scene.
Being a part of the Drama Club's backstage crew was really great for me. There are so many things that need to be done. It is a good way to be active. Next year, be a part of the crew or as Mrs. Mendes calls it, the Drama Club family.

Aladdin cast
By Brooke Lavalle
A very delightful experience in which to be a part, WMS Drama Club performing Aladdin, Jr, is about a poor man who falls in love with a princess. He has to find a way to impress her so they can marry each other.
Many important roles make the production successful. As a townsperson in the play, I get to sing, dance, and react to what other roles say or do in the play. My favorite song to sing is “Friend Like Me” because it is catchy and easy to remember. My favorite song to move to is “Prince Ali” because it is a quick dance and is easy to remember.
Students with lead roles may get to say more lines and act in character, but without the townspeople, the show would be ruined. Townspeople need to sing and dance in the background to help out the lead roles so they aren’t the only ones singing or dancing. Reacting to what others say or do is important too. It can be a funny reaction, a serious reaction, and much more. Reactions help the audience enjoy the play.
I am proud to be a townsperson in the play. I hope you enjoyed watching the show as much as I enjoyed performing in it.
